About us

K9MOM was started in 2012 by a small group of friends that wanted to help dogs in dire situations to find homes.

Central Wisconsin is very lucky to have shelters that have the ability to care for the vast majority of dogs that they receive, it is a sad fact that there are many areas where animals are put down every day.  The worst part about this is that the pets are not put down because they are mean, aggressive, ill or injured.  There are dogs and puppies that are healthy and well mannered - many are house trained and very sweet  - there just are not enough adopters to give them homes.

This rescue was started when .  We tried to find rescues to work with but none were close enough, so we elected to jump in to make a difference.  We are NOT a 501C 3.  We do not take cash donations but will accept supplies or assistance paid directly to the vet or other services we need to help the dogs.

Mia - confident & relaxed
Mia - scared & insecure

Meet Mia - our first rescue dog

Mia was found in abandoned in a trailer court in Arkansas where she had a litter of five puppies.  She was heart worm positive and very shy.  Another rescue arranged to bring her & her puppies to Wisconsin.  She was a very good momma and raised 5 happy, healthy puppies who all easily found homes.  After her puppies were adopted, Mia went into a depression.  She was taken back to the shelter where she was treated for a skin disorder & to get emotionally strong enough to be treated.  Unfortunately, the shelter was much too scary for her & she continued to deteriorate.  Her hair fell out & she got to a point where she would not even move to eliminate waste - she just stayed in a corner.

One of our volunteers had fostered Mia with her puppies and couldn't let her stay there.  She and another volunteer worked together to keep Mia in a home setting where she gained confidence and was finally able to be treated for heart worm.

Once Mia was posted on Petfinder, several people expressed interest in her.  A home was selected and as you can see by the picture, she is doing fantastic.  Here is the latest story we received from her new home:

Dana was laying on the living room floor doing her math homework, like only an 8th grader could.  Mia laid down right next to her, head to head, paw to paw.  Mia watched intently as Dana did her work, practically checking her answers.   After about 5-7 minutes of studying the situation over, Mia jumped up, grabbed Dana's pencil in her mouth, and ran off with it in one smooth move.  It was so funny!!  We were hysterical.  Mia was so pleased with herself, her tail went wild!

This is exactly why we do rescue!
